Specifications: Hook-Ups Standard Picture Hanger

The Hook-Ups Standard Hanger consists of a left and a right hanger, the screws needed to attach the Hook-Ups mounting plates to a wood frame or a metal frame and two 30 lb. picture hooks with nails.

The plate sections are installed on the the back side of the picture frame at the top corners. The picture hooks are installed on the wall. The adjustable threaded shafts attached to the plate sections have a ring opening at their upper end which are then hung on the picture hooks.

Hook-Ups Standard Hangers have small knurled adjustment knobs that allow you to make leveling adjustments without having to take the picture off the wall. Once adjusted, the frame will stay permanently level.

HWR-101 is not a security (frame locking) hanger.

For the security version go here.

The Hook-Ups Standard Hanger is a particularly good hardware choice when hanging tall or long pictures or any picture where achieving a perfect, permanent level is important. Hook-Ups Hangers will fit on just about any wood frame with the exception of very narrow frames (where the mounting plate may be too wide) and very heavy frames (where the picture hooks may not be able to support the picture weight). See below for metal frame information.

Maximum Picture Weight: Do not hang pictures weighing more than 25 lbs. on Hook-Ups Standard Hangers.

Please Note

This is not a security (frame locking) hanger. We also carry the security version of Hook-Ups, with the same leveling adjustment feature but with locking capability. Go to this page for Hook-Ups Security Hangers.

• If you prefer an adjustable picture hanging system where the adjustment is made at the wall hook rather than on the hanger that goes on the frame, take a look at our Adjustable J-Hook.

Technical Note on Using Hook-Ups Standard Hangers with Metal Frames

Hook-Ups Standard Hangers will fit on all currently manufactured metal frames generically designated as #11 Profile moulding. This includes the metal moulding currently made by Nielsen, Clark, Designer, Alumaframe, Global Art, MCS, Decor and most OEM manufacturers. The #11 Profile category (and compatible profiles) constitute probably 95% of the current metal moulding market.

If you are installing older metal-framed pictures, you should be aware that metal frame moulding design has evolved over the years and the Hook-Ups mounting plate may not fit inside the back channel of certain older, now obsolete style metal frames (typically pre-1980 manufacture).

There are a small number of these older extrusion profiles still being made, the so-called #186 Profile and #444 Profile. These profiles have a narrower back channel, measuring about 1/4" wide, compared to the standard 3/8" wide universal channel of the #11 Profile. Hook-Ups hardware will not fit on #186 or #444 profile metal frame moulding.

Hook-Ups Hangers cannot be used on low-end crimped corner metal frames (also called "back-load" or "back-loaded" frames). Back-loaded metal frames do not have a back channel at all and look like this at the corners.

As long as the corner hardware and channel on the back side of your metal frame looks like this and the channel is 3/8" wide, Hook-Ups hardware will fit.

Instructions: Hook-Ups Standard Picture Hanger

  1. Place the frame face-down on a blanket or soft surface.
  2. For Wood Frames: Position left and right hangers on each side of the back of the frame, about 2" down from the top edge and a little in from the outside edge. Make sure both hangers are equidistant from the top edge of the frame and are far down enough so that the frame will hide the wall hooks when the frame is hung. Drill pilot holes and attach the hangers using the wood screws provided. Position the small knurled adjuster knobs on both hangers at the halfway position.
  3. For Metal Frames: Start the set screws provided in the threaded holes in the hanger plates. Place hangers in the left and right frame rail channels on the back side of the frame, about 2" down from top edge. Make sure both hangers are equidistant from the top edge of the frame and are far down enough so that the frame will hide the wall hooks when the frame is hung. Tighten down the set screws firmly but do not over tighten. Position the knurled adjuster knobs on both hangers at the halfway position.
  4. Measure the distance between the two hangers installed on the frame (from one hanger plate "neck" hole to the other).
  5. Nail the two picture hooks provided into the wall at your desired height, as level as possible and spaced apart at the distance measured in Step 4 above.
  6. Hang the frame on the picture hooks, one side at a time. As you are hanging, turn the hangers so that the flat side of the hanger's ring opening is facing the wall.
  7. Check for level. If the picture is not perfectly level, reach behind the frame and, using your fingers, turn the small knurled adjuster knob on either hanger up or down to adjust.
