Specifications:
Frame-Lock
Security Hanger
|
The Frame-Lock
security hanging system uses a low-profile aluminum bracket
to attach pictures to the wall at the top rail of the
picture frame. After this bracket is in place, a locking
T-Head screw is connected to the bottom rail to secure the
frame.
The Frame-Lock
bracket makes it very easy to create a level hanging point
at the top of the picture--no need to carefully space apart
and level two separate smaller brackets or hangers as with
other security hanging systems. Multiple picture
installations take significantly less time to
complete.
Frame-Lock Hangers
are supplied in three bracket lengths: 6" long for pictures
up to 20" wide, 12" long for pictures 20" to 30" wide, and
18" long for pictures over 30" wide. Each size is available
in a version for wood frames and a version for metal
sectional (Nielsen type) frames. Please refer to the
parts
lists below
for the specific hardware components contained in each
set.
Brackets are made of
extruded aluminum and are 1 1/8" wide by 1/16" thick. There
is no difference in the bracket profile supplied for wood
and metal frames--they can be interchanged if
necessary.
To use Frame-Lock
Security Hangers on a wood picture frame, a second matching
bracket (included in wood frame sets) must be attached to
the back side of the frame's top rail. Metal sectional
frames do not need any hardware to be placed on the frame
itself--the "universal" channel on the back side of the
metal frame accepts the bracket flange and T-Head
screw.
For a complete
step-by-step installation sequence, see the instructions
at the bottom of this page.

Frame-Lock brackets
are attached to the wall with the screws and plastic anchors
supplied with each set. This fastening method creates a very
solid, stable support for the frame on a standard drywall
wall. You can substitute different fastener hardware if
conditions require it.
All of
the fasteners needed for installation are included with each
Frame-Lock Hanger set.
6" brackets have two
3/16" diameter pre-drilled screw holes; 12" brackets have
three holes; 18" brackets have five holes. One or more screw
holes are slotted vertically to permit minor leveling
adjustments during installation.
It is
very important that Frame-Lock brackets be installed as
level as possible on the wall. Only slight leveling
corrections can be made later.
Please be sure that
you order the correct Frame-Lock Hanger set for the size and
type of frames that you want to security-install. General
guidelines are listed below.

If what you are
hanging is unusually light or unusually heavy for its size,
please adjust your selection accordingly. Call or email us
if you need advice on this.
If you are using
Frame-Lock Security Hangers on a narrow (thin) wood frame or
on a metal frame with a long horizontal span, make sure that
the frame is adequately braced internally so that the frame
will remain rigid under load. Note that the minimum
wood frame width required for bracket screw and mounting
plate screw placement is 3/4" (see installation
specifications table
below).

T-Lock Hardware
Some frames using a
6" or 12" Frame-Lock Hanger will benefit from an additional
mounting point at the bottom of the frame--one at each
corner of the bottom rail rather than just one at the center
of the bottom rail--four mounting points total for the
frame.
Please
Note: On 18" Frame-Lock Hanger sets the hardware for four
mounting points is already included.
This extra hardware
is optional, but adding a fourth mounting point will
make any frame more stable on the wall as well as more
secure.

For each 6" or 12"
Frame-Lock set where you want to add an extra locking point,
order one SEC-2X

(metal frame) in addition to the basic Frame-Lock
Hanger. The parts included in each Extra T-Lock Hardware set
are listed above.
Security
Wrench Installation Tool
The Security Wrench
shown below works with all three types of security hardware
that we offer. If you don't have a Security Wrench, a thin,
long-handled crescent wrench can be used instead to lock or
unlock frames, but the job is made much easier with this
special tool. Without it, wall surfaces tend to get scuffed,
fingers pinched and hardware damaged.
If you do not
already have one on hand, we strongly recommend that you
purchase at least one SEC-4
Security Wrench to facilitate the installation of security
hangers. This inexpensive, virtually unbreakable tool can be
used as often as necessary and need only be purchased
once.
Security
Wrenches are not automatically included with security
hardware orders. They must be purchased as a separate
item.
Technical
Note: Using Frame-Lock Hangers with Metal Frames
Frame-Lock Hangers
will fit on all currently manufactured metal frames
generically designated as #11 Profile moulding. This
includes the metal moulding currently made by Nielsen,
Clark, Designer, Alumaframe, Global Art, MCS, Decor and most
OEM manufacturers. The #11 Profile category (and compatible
profiles) constitute probably 95% of the current metal
moulding market.
If you are
installing older metal-framed pictures, you should be aware
that metal frame moulding design has evolved over the years
and Frame-Lock T-Head screws and brackets may not fit inside
the back channel of certain older, now obsolete style metal
frames (typically pre-1980 manufacture).
There are a small
number of these older extrusion profiles still being made,
the so-called #186 Profile and #444 Profile. These profiles
have a narrower back channel, measuring about 1/4" wide,
compared to the standard 3/8" wide universal channel of the
#11 Profile. Frame-Lock Hangers will not fit on #186 or #444
profile metal frame moulding.
Frame-Lock Hangers
cannot be used on low-end crimped corner metal frames (also
called "back-load" or "back-loaded" frames). Back-loaded
metal frames do not have a universal channel at all and look
like
this at the
corners.
As long as the
corner hardware and channel on the back side of your metal
frame looks like
this and the
channel is 3/8" wide, Frame-Lock hardware will
fit.
Final
Notes
Any
reasonably handy person will have no trouble hanging
pictures with Frame-Lock Hangers. The first picture you
tackle may take a little time, but once the installation
sequence is understood, hanging speed will increase.
A basic
instruction sheet is included with each shipment of
Frame-Lock Hangers. Or, if you prefer, refer to our complete
step-by-step Frame-Lock Hanger installation instructions
below.
Don't be put
off by the number of steps outlined in the Frame-Lock Hanger
instructions. The installation process is much more
straightforward and intuitive than it might appear from the
written description.

Instructions:
Frame-Lock
Security Hanger for Metal
Frames
|
- Mark the
position on the wall where you want the center of the top
of the frame to be. Use a pencil or small piece of tape
for this.
- Hold the
(6"/12"/18") aluminum bracket horizontally against the
wall, with the label facing towards you and the flanged
end of the bracket facing up and angled away from the
wall. Center the bracket left-to-right on the mark you
made on the wall in Step 1, with the top edge of the
bracket level at this same mark.
- Punch or mark
the position of the hole at the right hand end of the
bracket on the wall.
- Drill a 3/16"
dia. hole in the wall at this mark. (A 3/16" dia. hole is
usually sufficient for drywall--if the plastic anchor
starts to deform when hammering it in during Step 5
below, re-drill the hole using a 1/4" drill bit). If a
wall stud is hit, use the screw without the anchor or
move the bracket.
- Gently hammer
one of the white plastic anchors provided into the hole
in the wall until it is just flush with the wall surface.
Attach the bracket to the wall using one of the 1" screws
provided. Do not tighten this screw down completely
yet.
- Carefully level
the bracket on the wall using the screw already installed
as a pivot point (an inexpensive lightweight "torpedo"
level is good for this). Take care to position the
bracket as level as possible.
- Mark for and
install a white plastic anchor and screw in a second hole
at the left hand end of the bracket. Depending on the
length of the bracket and configuration of the screw
holes, be sure at least one in the two screws is in a
slotted bracket hole (see the note on bracket
screw holes above).
Tighten down both screws completely but do not
over-tighten--they should be snug, but too much force can
deform the plastic anchors.
- When the bracket
is screwed to the wall at both ends, hang the frame on
the bracket so that the flanged end of the bracket is
seated snugly inside the back channel of the metal
frame's top rail.
- Check the frame
for level. If not quite level, small adjustments are
possible by removing the frame from the wall, loosening
the bracket screw in the slotted hole slightly, shifting
the bracket up or down as needed, retightening the screw
and replacing the frame on the bracket.
- If you are using
a 12" or 18" bracket, remove the frame from the wall,
pencil-mark the position of the bracket on the wall at
the bottom edge as a reference, then install the
remaining white plastic anchor(s) and screw(s) and
replace the frame on the wall.
- For Frames
Using the 6" or 12" Bracket: With the frame hung
level on the bracket, lightly pencil-mark the wall at the
centerpoint of the frame's bottom rail where the rail's
back edge touches the wall.
- For Frames
Using the 18" Bracket: With the frame hung level on
the bracket, lightly pencil-mark the wall 3" in from each
side of the frame's bottom rail where the rail's back
edge touches the wall.
- Remove the frame
from the wall.
- Measure the
distance on your metal frame from the outer edge of the
frame to the center of the channel (this dimension can
vary with different types of metal frames). Transfer this
measurement to the wall, making a second pencil mark up
from the one(s) made in Step 11 or 12. Erase the bottom
mark(s).
- Drill a 5/16"
dia. hole at the pencil mark(s) made in Step 14 and
gently hammer the blue T-Head plastic anchor(s) provided
into the drilled hole(s) until just flush with the wall
surface.
- Thread the
T-Head screw(s) provided into the plastic anchor(s) until
about 3/8" extends out from the wall surface. Start the
T-Head screw first by hand and complete using a
Security
Wrench.
Align the head(s) to a final horizontal
position.
- Again place the
frame on the top bracket. The bottom T-Head screw(s)
should now be in position inside the back channel of the
frame's bottom rail.
- From the right
hand side, slide the Security Wrench up underneath the
bottom edge of the frame and, without lifting the frame
away from the wall, engage and rotate the T-Head screw(s)
clockwise one-quarter turn to a vertical position. The
frame is now locked to the wall.

Instructions:
Frame-Lock
Security Hanger for Wood Frames
|
- Place the frame
face-down on a soft surface.
- Place one of the
(6"/12"/18") aluminum brackets horizontally on the back
side of the frame's top rail, with the flanged end of the
bracket facing down and angled away from the frame. The
"Picture Hang Solutions" label on the bracket should be
upside down, facing out. Center the bracket left-to-right
on the frame and slightly down from the top edge. Make
sure the bracket is level on the frame. Mark the
positions of the bracket screw holes and attach the
bracket to the frame using the 1/2" screws provided.
Screw holes should be pre-drilled to avoid splitting the
wood.
- For Frames
Using the 6" or 12" Bracket: Attach the slotted
mounting plate horizontally at the center of the bottom
rail, slightly up from the bottom edge, using the 1/2"
screws provided. Screw holes should be pre-drilled to
avoid splitting the wood. Measure from the outside edge
of the frame's bottom rail to the center (top to bottom)
of the slot in the mounting plate. Write down this
measurement.
- For Frames
Using the 18" Bracket: Attach the two slotted
mounting plates horizontally, 3" in from each side of the
frame's bottom rail, slightly up from the bottom edge,
using the 1/2" screws provided. Screw holes should be
pre-drilled to avoid splitting the wood. Measure from the
outside edge of the frame's bottom rail to the center
(top to bottom) of the slot in the mounting plates. Write
down this measurement.
- Mark the
position on the wall where you want the center of the top
of the frame to be. Use a pencil or small piece of tape
for this.
- Hold the second
(6"/12"/18") aluminum bracket horizontally against the
wall with the flanged end of the bracket facing up and
away from the wall. The "Picture Hang Solutions" label on
the bracket should be right side up, facing out. Center
the bracket side-to-side on the mark you made in Step 5,
with the top edge of the bracket level and approximately
3/4" below the mark (precise measurement, if required,
will depend on location of frame bracket on the
frame).
- Punch or mark
the position of the hole at the right hand end of the
bracket on the wall.
- Drill a 3/16"
dia. hole in the wall at this mark. (A 3/16" dia. hole is
usually sufficient for drywall--if the plastic anchor
starts to deform when hammering it in during Step 5,
re-drill the hole using a 1/4" drill bit). If a wall stud
is hit, use the screw without the anchor or move the
bracket.
- Gently hammer
one of the white plastic anchors provided into the hole
in the wall until it is just flush with the wall surface.
Attach the bracket to the wall using one of the 1" screws
provided. Do not tighten this screw down completely
yet.
- Carefully level
the mounting bracket on the wall using the screw already
installed as a pivot point. An inexpensive lightweight
"torpedo" level is good for this. Take care to
position the bracket as level as
possible.
- When the bracket
is screwed to the wall at both ends, hang the frame on
the bracket so that the flanged end of the bracket on the
wall mates with the bracket on the back of the frame's
top rail.
- Check the frame
for level. If not quite level, small adjustments are
possible by removing the frame from the wall, loosening
the bracket screw in the slotted bracket hole slightly,
shifting the bracket up or down as needed, retightening
the screw and replacing the frame on the
bracket.
- If you are using
a 12" or 18" bracket, remove the frame from the wall,
pencil-mark the position of the bracket on the wall at
the bottom edge as a reference, then install the
remaining white plastic anchor(s) and screw(s) and
replace the frame on the wall.
- With the frame
hung on the wall, lightly pencil-mark the position of the
frame's outside edge on the wall at the center
(left-to-right) of where the mounting plate is located on
the bottom rail of the frame. [Expand directions
here and below accordingly for the 18" bracket which will
have two mounting plates].
- Remove the frame
from the wall.
- Transfer the
measurement taken at Step 3 or 4 to the wall, making a
second pencil mark up from the one made in Step 15. Erase
the bottom mark.
- Drill a 5/16"
dia. hole at the pencil mark made in Step 17 and gently
hammer the blue T-Head plastic anchor provided into the
drilled hole until it is just flush with the wall
surface.
- Thread the
T-Head screw provided into the plastic anchor until about
3/8" extends out from the wall surface. Start the T-Head
screw first by hand and complete using a Security
Wrench.
Align the head to a final horizontal
position.
- Again hang the
frame on the wall. The T-Head screw just installed should
fall inside the slot of the mounting plate on the back of
the bottom rail.
- From the right
hand side, slide the Security Wrench up underneath the
bottom edge of the frame and, without lifting the frame
away from the wall, engage and rotate the T-Head screw
clockwise one-quarter turn to a vertical position. The
frame is now locked to the wall.
