Specifications: Hook-Ups Security Hanger

Hook-Ups Security Hangers are the easiest to install of the three picture hanging security systems we offer. Even if you have never installed security hardware before, you should have no trouble understanding or using this hardware.

The Hook-Ups System locks a frame to the wall with a T-Head Screw at the two top corners only--the bottom of the frame remains free. This makes Hook-Ups Security Hangers in theory less secure than three-point or four-point systems, but two locking points are often sufficient for many applications.

Since Hook-Ups Hangers permit a height adjustment of an inch or more if necessary, they are forgiving of "not-quite-level" installations of the T-Head wall hardware. The small knurled adjuster knobs on Hook-Ups Hangers allow you to quickly make leveling adjustments after the picture is hung--no need to remove the frame from the wall.

Hook-Ups Security Hanger Set for Wood or Metal Frame
Hook-Ups Security - SEC-1

• (2) 2" x 1/2" mounting plates (L & R)
• (2) pre-attached 2 1/4" long adjustable hangers
• (4) 1/4" set screws for metal frames
• (4) #6 x 1/2" screws for wood frames
• (2) 1 1/2" T-Head screws
• (2) T-Head plastic anchors

All the necessary screws for attaching a Hook-Ups Security Hanger to the back of either a wood frame or a metal frame are included with each set of Hook-Ups hardware. You use whichever group of 4 screws is appropriate for your frame. See our step-by-step instructions below for more detail.

Order one SEC-1 for each frame, wood or metal, that you want to install using a Hook-Ups Security Hanger. The parts included in each set are listed above.

Do not use Hook-Ups Security Hangers to hang items weighing more than 40 lbs.

If you have heavy items to security-hang, we recommend using Frame-Lock Security Hangers.

Please see the photos below for detail and demonstration views of Hook-Ups Security Hanger hardware.

We also carry a non-security version of the Hook-Ups Hanger, with the same leveling adjustment feature but without locking capability. Go here for that product.

Technical Note on Using Hook-Ups Hangers with Metal Frames

Hook-Up Hangers will fit on all currently manufactured metal frames generically designated as #11 Profile moulding. This includes the metal moulding currently made by Nielsen, Clark, Designer, Alumaframe, Global Art, MCS, Decor and most OEM manufacturers. The #11 Profile category (and compatible profiles) constitute probably 95% of the current metal moulding market.

If you are installing older metal-framed pictures, you should be aware that metal frame moulding design has evolved over the years and Hook-Ups mounting plates may not fit inside the back channel of certain older, now obsolete metal frame styles (typically pre-1980 manufacture).

There are a small number of these older extrusion profiles still being made, the so-called #186 Profile and #444 Profile. These profiles have a narrower back channel, measuring about 1/4" wide, compared to the standard 3/8" wide universal channel of the #11 Profile. Hook-Ups hardware will not fit on #186 or #444 profile metal frame moulding.

Hook-Ups Hangers cannot be used on low-end crimped corner metal frames (also called "back-load" or "back-loaded" frames). Back-loaded metal frames do not have a universal channel at all and look like this at the corners.

As long as the corner hardware and channel on the back side of your metal frame looks like this and the channel is 3/8" wide, Hook-Ups hardware will fit.

Security Wrench Installation Tool

The Security Wrench shown below works with all three types of security hardware that we offer. In a pinch, a thin, long-handled crescent wrench can be used instead of a Security Wrench to lock or unlock frames, but the job is made much easier with this special tool. Without it, wall surfaces tend to get scuffed, fingers pinched and hardware damaged.

If you do not already have one on hand, it is strongly recommended that you purchase at least one SEC-4 Security Wrench to facilitate the installation of Hook-Up hangers. This inexpensive, virtually unbreakable tool can be used as often as necessary and need only be purchased once.

Security Wrenches are not automatically included with security hardware orders. They must be purchased as a separate item.

Final Note

Any reasonably handy person can install Hook-Ups Hangers. A basic instruction sheet is included with each shipment. Or, if you prefer, refer to our complete step-by-step Hook-Up Hanger installation instructions directly below.

Instructions: Hook-Ups Security Hanger

  1. Place the frame face-down on a soft surface.
  2. For Wood Frames: Position left and right hangers on each side of the back of the frame, about 2" down from the top edge and a little in from the outside edge. Make sure both hangers are equidistant from the top edge of the frame. Drill pilot holes and attach hangers using the wood screws provided. Position the small knurled adjuster knobs on both hangers at the halfway position.
  3. For Metal Frames: Start the set screws provided in the threaded holes in the hanger plates. Place hangers into the left and right frame rail channels on the back side of the frame, about 2" down from top edge. Tighten the set screws firmly but do not over tighten. Position the knurled adjuster knobs at the halfway position on both hangers.
  4. Measure the distance between the two hangers installed on the frame (at the hanger plate "neck" holes).
  5. Drill two 1/4"-5/16" dia. holes in the wall at your desired height, level and spaced apart at the distance measured in Step 4 above. (A 1/4" dia. hole is usually sufficient for drywall--for harder surfaces or if the plastic anchors start to deform when hammering them in during Step 6, use a 5/16" drill bit). These two holes should be as level as possible, but they need not be perfectly level.
  6. Gently hammer the two T-Head plastic anchors provided into the drilled holes until they are just flush with the wall surface.
  7. Thread the two T-Head screws provided into the T-Head plastic anchors until about 3/8" of each screw extends out from the wall surface. Start the T-Head screws by hand and complete using a Security Wrench. Align the heads to a final vertical position.
  8. Hang the frame's attached Hook-Ups Hangers on the T-Head screws, one side at a time. As you are hanging, turn the hangers so that the flat side of the hanger's rectangular opening is facing the T-Head screw.
  9. Using the Security Wrench, reach behind the frame and rotate each T-Head screw one-quarter turn to a horizontal position. The frame is now locked to the wall.
  10. Check for level. If the picture is not level, reach behind the frame and, using your fingers, turn the small knurled adjuster knob on either hanger up or down to adjust.
