Specifications: Screw Eye Picture Hangers

Screw eyes have been used to hang pictures for a very long time. However, in recent years most professional framers have switched over to modern flat profile Picture Hangers, which offer significant advantages over traditional screw eyes for hook & wire picture hanging.

Screw eye hangers can be difficult to turn in completely straight and the inevitable elongation of the screw hole that results from this problem weakens their holding power. They can deform and even break off at the neck if they are torqued too vigorously. And the larger sizes tend to stick out unattractively on the back side of the frame.

Screw eyes are supplied in nine sizes in both short-shank and long-shank versions. The traditional size designations run from #208 (largest) to #217 (smallest).

For the reasons given above, we advise against using the larger screw eye sizes for hanging pictures.

Screw Eyes: Small, Very Small, Tiny

We offer only the three smallest short-shank sizes: #'s 215 1/2, 216 1/2 and 217 1/2 (Small, Very Small and Tiny). These bright zinc plated screw eye hangers are still a sensible option for use on very narrow (3/8" wide or less) wood frames where all our other hanger options--even the Flanger or Mini Hanger--are too big for the width of the back side of the frame moulding.

Please Note

Screw eye hanger total lengths are listed above. These are very small hangers.

Small screw eye hangers will safely support small, lightweight pictures without difficulty, but do not use these hangers on any frame larger than 11" x 14" or more than 1 lb. in weight.

For larger pictures, or if the frame back side width is 1/2" or more, flat profile wood frame wire hangers are available here; heavy-duty hangers here.

Instructions: Screw Eye Picture Hangers

  1. Lay the frame face down on a blanket or soft surface.
  2. Screw eyes should be installed on the frame side rails, between one-quarter and one-third of the way down from the top of the picture.
  3. Measure and mark this distance equally both side rails.
  4. Lightly punch starting holes for screw eyes with an awl or similar tool.
  5. Turn the screw eyes in slowly and carefully by hand, taking care not to elongate the screw holes. The bottom of the screw eye's circular wire opening should just touch the surface of the frame.
  6. Attach appropriate size picture wire to the hangers using the method illustrated here.
  7. Leave enough slack in the wire so that when it is pulled taut up against the back of the frame, the center point of the wire reaches about half the distance between the hanger position and the top of the frame.
  8. Hang the picture on a small Picture Hook.
