Specifications: Screw Eye Picture Hangers

Screw eyes have been used to hang pictures for a very long time. In recent years many professional framers have switched over to modern flat profile picture hangers, which offer significant advantages over traditional screw eyes for hook & wire picture hanging.

Screw eye hangers must be installed carefully. Any elongation of the screw hole while turning them in will weaken their holding power. Screw eyes can deform and even break off at the neck if they are torqued down too vigorously. And the larger sizes tend to stick out unattractively on the back side of the frame.

Nevertheless, screw eye hangers remain in widespread use in the picture framing industry and have many applications outside of conventional picture hanging. They are quick and easy to install and are inexpensive.

The smaller screw eye sizes have always been a good option for hanging very narrow (3/8" or less) wood frames where other hanger options--even the Flanger or Mini Hanger--are too big for the width of the back side of the frame moulding.

We offer screw eye hangers in all nine available sizes. The traditional picture framing size designations run from 208 1/2 (largest) to 217 1/2 (smallest). The material is steel, zinc-plated. Nominal dimensions for screw eye hangers are shown in the table below.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Actual dimensions may vary slightly. Manufacturing tolerances are not closely held on screw eye hangers.

Instructions: Screw Eye Picture Hangers

  1. Lay the frame face down on a blanket or soft surface.
  2. Screw eye hangers should be installed on the frame side rails, about one-third of the way down from the top edge of the picture. Measure and mark this distance equally on both side rails.
  3. Make pilot holes for screw eyes by punching with an awl or similar tool (small sizes) or drilling with a bit a little smaller than the screw eye diameter (larger sizes).
  4. Turn the screw eyes in slowly and carefully by hand, taking care not to elongate the screw holes. Once started, larger screw eyes can be turned down quickly by inserting the point of an awl into the eye and using the awl as a turning lever.
  5. When fully inserted the bottom edge of the eye should be just slightly above the surface of the frame, angled inward.
  6. Attach appropriate size picture wire to the screw eye hangers using the method illustrated here.
  7. Leave enough slack in the wire so that when it is pulled taut up against the back of the frame, the center point of the wire reaches about half the distance between the screw eye hanger location on the side rails and the top of the frame.
  8. Hang the picture on a picture hook.
