Specifications:
Medium-Duty
Cleat Hangers
|
Medium-Duty Cleat
Hangers are made of extruded aluminum. Cleats are 1 1/4"
wide and 3/32" thick--about twice as thick as our
Light-Duty
Cleat Hangers.
They are available in three lengths (24", 36" and 48"). All
three lengths have 3/16" diameter fastener holes spaced at
4" intervals. See the tables
below for additional specs.
A Medium-Duty Cleat
Hanger set consists of two identical cleats. To install, one
cleat is mounted with the open side facing upward on the
wall. The other cleat is mounted open side facing downward
just below the top edge of the back side of the object being
hung. When the cleats are brought together gravity holds the
hung object snugly and securely in position on the wall. To
disengage, you simply lift the hung object a few inches
directly upwards.
We offer four
different types of fasteners to attach Medium-Duty Cleat
hangers to the wall and three different lengths of tapping
screws to attach Medium-Duty Cleat Hangers to the back of a
wood frame or other object. This hardware is described
below.
You can purchase fasteners from us above,
or provide your own anchors and screws to attach the cleats
if you prefer.
Please
Note: Installation fasteners for Medium-Duty Cleat Hangers
are NOT included in cleat sets--fasteners must be purchased
separately.
For very heavy items
(80 lbs. or more), considering moving up to our
Heavy-Duty
Cleat Hangers.
For items under 30 lbs. Light-Duty
Cleat Hangers
should suffice.

Fasteners
Wall Cleat
Fasteners
- Screw-In
Anchor (HWR-187-1)
- A strong, very easy to use fastener, designed for
drywall. Requires only a phillips screwdriver to install
in the wall. The screw can be removed from the anchor and
reinserted as often as required. Anchors can be removed
from the wall in seconds.
- Toggle
Bolt (HWR-192)
- A very strong fastener for drywall or plaster-on-lathe.
Requires a fairly large hole to be drilled in the wall.
Once installed, the bolt can be loosened but not fully
removed without causing the toggle section to fall and be
lost behind the wall.
- Molly
Bolt (HWR-193)
- Another very strong fastener for hollow walls. Molly
bolts are available in different size ranges for various
wall thicknesses--our HWR-193 Molly is the correct size
for attaching a medium cleat to 1/2" to 5/8" drywall.
After installation in the wall, the bolt can be fully
removed and reattached as required.
- #6
x 1 1/2" Pan-Head Tapping Screw
(HWR-197)
- When a wall cleat hole is positioned at a wall stud
location, this tapping screw can be used to fasten the
cleat directly into the stud. HWR-197 will penetrate both
wood or metal studs.
Frame Cleat
Fasteners
- #6
Pan-Head Tapping Screws (HWR-183, HWR-184, HWR-184)
- For
attaching cleats to the back of a wood frame or panel, we
offer three different lengths of standard #6 pan-head
tapping screws. Medium-Duty Cleats are 3/32" thick at the
pre-drilled screw hole positions, so take this dimension
into consideration when selecting a screw length for
frame cleats. Use the longest screws you can to attach
the frame cleats to the frame that will not break through
on the face side.
Additional
Notes
If you are using
Medium-Duty Cleat Hangers on a narrow (thin) frame, make
certain that the frame is braced internally in such a way
that the frame's top rail will remain completely rigid under
load. See also the minimum frame width required for frame
cleat screw placement in the table
above.
The frame and
wall cleats will not connect together properly if your wall
is bowed, wavy or uneven at the wall cleat location. See
item #3 in the instructions directly below.
The wall
cleat can certainly be screwed into one or more wall studs,
but this is not an absolute requirement in most
situations.
It is rarely
necessary to put a fastener through every pre-drilled screw
hole on the cleats. Use your best judgement about this based
on the size and weight of the object you are
hanging.
If required,
cleats can be cut to to a shorter length using a power mitre
saw with a metal-cutting blade or even by hand with a
hacksaw.

Instructions:
Medium-Duty
Cleat Hangers
|
- A set of
Medium-Duty Cleat Hangers consists of two identical
aluminum cleats. Either one can serve as the "wall cleat"
or the "frame cleat."
- Decide on and
mark for the location of the wall cleat. The wall cleat
should be oriented so that the screw holes run along the
bottom edge and the top edge is open and out from the
wall. Depending on the position of the other cleat on the
frame, the top of the hung frame will fall approximately
1 1/2" above the top edge of the wall cleat.
- Check that the
wall surface is flat by placing the long edge of a cleat
against the wall where the wall cleat will be attached.
If the wall is bowed or wavy the wall cleat will need to
be shimmed to permit the two cleats to engage
properly.
- Attach the wall
cleat to the wall using fasteners of your choice. It is
usually not necessary to use a fastener at every
pre-drilled cleat hole. It is very important that the
wall cleat be mounted perfectly level on the
wall.
- Place the frame
face down on a blanket or soft surface or lean larger
frames face-in against a cushioned wall. Attach the frame
cleat to the back of the frame's top rail with #6
pan-head tapping screws, 1/2"-1" down from the top edge
and centered on the rail. The frame cleat should be
oriented so that the screw holes run along the top edge
and the bottom edge is open and out from the frame rail.
Be sure that the frame cleat is mounted perfectly
level (positioned down evenly from the top edge of the
frame).
- To hang the
frame, hold it flush against the wall with the frame
cleat positioned slightly above the wall cleat and
centered on it. Let the frame slide down the wall slowly
and evenly until the cleats engage each other
completely.
- Some
side-to-side adjustment is possible by lifting the frame
slightly and shifting it to the left or right. When
adjusting, make sure that the frame cleat remains at
least 90% within the span of the wall cleat.
- To remove the
frame from the wall completely, lift it directly upward a
couple of inches until the cleats are no longer
engaged.
