ORDERING INFORMATION
Light-Duty Cleat Hangers are supplied in three lengths: 6" long for pictures up to 20" wide, 12" long for pictures 20" to 30" wide, and 18" long for pictures over 30" wide. Each size is available in a version for wood frames and a version for metal sectional (Nielsen type) frames. The cleats themselves are made of extruded aluminum and are 1 1/8" wide by 1/16" thick. There is no difference in the cleat profile supplied for wood and metal frames--they can be interchanged if necessary. To use Light-Duty Cleat Hangers to hang a wood picture frame, a second matching cleat (included with wood frame sets) must be attached to the back side of the frame's top rail. Metal sectional frames do not need any hardware to be placed on the frame itself--the "universal" channel on the back side of the metal frame accepts the cleat hanger. All the necessary fastener hardware needed for installation is included in each Light-Duty Cleat Hanger set. Please be sure that you order the appropriate Light-Duty Cleat Hanger set for the size and type of frames that you want to hang. General guidelines are listed below.
If what you are hanging is unusually light or unusually heavy for its size, please adjust your selection accordingly. Call or email us if you need advice on this.
Light-Duty Cleat Hangers are normally attached to the wall with the screws and plastic anchors supplied. This fastening method creates a solid, stable support for the frame. You can substitute different fastener hardware if you prefer. 6" cleats have two 3/16" diameter pre-drilled screw holes; 12" cleats have three holes; 18" cleats have five holes. One or more screw holes are slotted vertically to permit leveling adjustments during installation. If you are using a Light-Duty Cleat Hanger on a narrow (thin) wood frame or on a metal frame with a long horizontal span, make certain that the frame is sufficiently braced internally so that the frame's top rail will remain rigid under load. See also the minimum wood frame width required (for frame cleat screw placement) in the installation specifications table below.
Wall cleats are installed on the wall with the open side facing upward. For wood frames, the second cleat is installed on the back side of the top rail of the frame with the open side facing downward. In the two demonstration photos just below, the cleat on the bottom is attached to the wall. In a real installation, the upper cleat would be attached to the back of the wood frame's top rail, with the attaching screws passing outward through the upper cleat screw holes and into the back of the frame. It is very important that the wall cleat be installed as level as possible on the wall. Only slight leveling adjustments can be made later.
For metal frames, the wall cleat fits directly into the "universal channel" on the back side of the frame as shown in the photos directly below.
Technical Note: Using Light-Duty Cleat Hangers with Metal Frames Light-Duty Cleat Hangers will fit on all currently manufactured metal frames generically designated as #11 Profile moulding. This includes the metal moulding currently made by Nielsen, Clark, Designer, Alumaframe, Global Art, MCS, Decor and most OEM manufacturers. The #11 Profile category (and compatible profiles) constitute probably 95% of the current metal moulding market. If you are installing older metal-framed pictures, you should be aware that metal frame moulding design has evolved over the years and the Light-Duty Cleat Hanger cleat may not fit inside the back channel of certain older, now obsolete style metal frames (typically pre-1980 manufacture). There are a small number of these older extrusion profiles still being made, the so-called #186 Profile and #444 Profile. These profiles have a narrower back channel, measuring about 1/4" wide, compared to the standard 3/8" wide universal channel of the #11 Profile. Cleat Hangers will not fit on #186 or #444 moulding. Cleat Hangers also cannot be used on low-end crimped corner metal frames ("back-load" or "back-loaded" frames). Back-loaded metal frames do not have a universal channel at all and look like this at the corners. As long as the corner hardware and channel on the back side of your metal frame looks like this and the channel is 3/8" wide, Light-Duty Cleat Hangers will work.
Additional Note For a related product that works in a similar fashion to a cleat hanger, see our page on the plastic Track Master Hanger. The Track Master Hangers we carry are for metal frames only. Track Master Hangers are attached to the wall with nails, so wall damage is minimal, but they will not support as much weight as a metal cleat hanger.
